Land and Power

Images selected from two ongoing projects. Dreams of Hope: Legacies of Power explores the lingering influence—on the land and people of Hawai‘i—and lifestyle of the missionary families. The title refers to the disparity between the conditions of the immigrant population imported to work in the sugar plantations and the economic power wielded by the large corporations founded by the descendants of the missionaries. The second project, Native Lands, Ancient Voices, investigates the traditional native Hawaiian sites on the volcanic summits Hawai‘i—and and the vigorously contested lands used for astronomy and the building of numerous, large telescopes.  All images are large-scale archival inkjet prints.
